Electrical faults and warning signs: tripping breakers, hot sockets and flickering lights

A practical guide to electrical warning signs in apartments, houses and commercial premises. Learn what repeated MCB, RCCB or RCBO tripping may indicate, why a socket-outlet can become hot, when flickering lights may point to a neutral fault, and when a circuit must remain out of service until professional inspection.

Do not open a panel or work live to find the fault

Incoming supplies, meters, distribution boards, concealed wiring, N, PE and PEN conductors require qualified personnel. A breaker handle in the OFF position does not prove that every internal part is de-energised. Safe isolation and verification of absence of voltage are required before electrical work.

Smoke, flame or active arcing: call 101 or 112 in Russia

Leave the danger area, warn other occupants and call the fire and rescue service. Do not use water on energised electrical wiring or equipment. Disconnect the supply only when this can be done without approaching smoke, water, flame or exposed live parts.

Electrical fault urgency levels

Level 1

Immediate danger

Smoke, visible flame, active arcing, strong burning smell, electric shock, water entering live equipment or exposed live parts.

Leave the danger area and call 101 or 112 when fire or active danger is present.
Level 2

Keep the circuit out of service

Immediate repeated tripping, hot socket, melted insulation, crackling, major voltage fluctuation or a damaged fixed appliance.

Do not repeatedly reset the device. Arrange professional inspection.
Level 3

Priority diagnosis

Intermittent flicker, warm accessories, occasional RCCB trips, loose plug retention, buzzing or partial circuit failure.

Reduce use and arrange diagnosis before the symptom becomes more severe.
Level 4

Planned maintenance

Outdated labels, missing blanks, old devices, visible dust, no inspection records or unexplained previous modifications.

Schedule an inspection and update the documentation.
Uncertainty increases urgency. When you cannot identify the source, affected circuit or safe isolation point, keep people away and do not experiment with the installation.

What to do if electrical equipment is smoking or burning

Warn people and move away

Keep children and other occupants away from the affected room, panel, socket-outlet or appliance.

State the exact address, floor, room, what is burning and whether people may be in danger.

Do not use water on energised equipment

Water can create an electric shock path and spread danger. Treat the equipment as energised unless safe disconnection has been confirmed.

Disconnect only from a safe location

Do not approach a wet, arcing or smoke-filled panel. Use the safe building isolation point only when it is accessible and understood.

Leave when smoke spreads

Do not remain to investigate. Close doors behind you when possible and follow fire evacuation instructions.

Why does an MCB or circuit-breaker trip?

An MCB normally responds to overload or short circuit. It can also trip because of an internal appliance fault, damaged cable, a poor terminal connection, unsuitable tripping characteristic or elevated panel temperature.

Trips after several minutes

Possible overload, excessive ambient temperature, poor connection or an unsuitable rated current.

Trips immediately

Possible short circuit, severe appliance fault, damaged cable or high inrush current.

Trips only with one appliance

The appliance, plug, socket, flex or dedicated circuit may be faulty.

Trips during wet weather

Outdoor, underground or damp wiring may have moisture or insulation damage.

Do not install a higher-rated breaker to stop tripping

A larger rating may leave the cable without adequate overload protection. The connected load, conductor size, installation method, fault-loop conditions and original fault must be checked first.

Why does an RCCB, RCD or RCBO trip?

Residual current protection trips when current does not return through the intended monitored conductors. The cause may be insulation leakage, moisture, an appliance filter, mixed neutrals, N-PE contact, accumulated leakage or a wiring error.

Trips when one appliance starts

Possible appliance insulation failure, moisture, damaged flex or normal leakage exceeding the available margin.

Trips when another circuit is switched on

Possible mixed neutrals or current returning through the wrong RCCB group.

Trips after renovation work

Possible cable damage, N-PE connection, incorrectly grouped neutral or contaminated accessory.

Trips intermittently during rain

Possible outdoor junction, façade cable, pump, gate or underground circuit moisture ingress.

An RCCB trip is not proof that the RCCB is defective. Replacing the device without insulation, neutral and appliance checks can leave the actual fault unchanged.

Overheating connection

Why does a socket-outlet or plug become hot?

HOT

Heating is usually caused by current passing through excessive resistance or by current above the intended rating. The weakest point may be the socket contacts, plug pins, flexible cord, terminal, adapter or extension lead.

A poorly clamped conductor creates local resistance and heat.

The plug is not held firmly and the contact area becomes too small.

What does electric shock from a tap, appliance or metal enclosure mean?

Do not touch again to “check”

A tingling or shock sensation can indicate insulation failure, missing protective conductor continuity, an incorrect N-PE connection, damaged appliance wiring, dangerous potential transfer or another installation fault.

Do not touch the metal enclosure, tap or connected pipework again.

What can an ordinary user do safely?

Reasonable external actions

  • stop using the affected appliance or circuit;
  • keep people away from the danger area;
  • photograph visible external markings from a safe distance;
  • record when the fault occurs and which equipment is connected;
  • call 101 or 112 when smoke, flame or immediate danger is present;
  • contact a qualified electrician for diagnosis.

Actions that require a specialist

  • opening the distribution board cover;
  • tightening live terminals;
  • replacing MCBs, RCCBs or RCBOs;
  • joining N and PE or changing PEN connections;
  • insulation, fault-loop or RCD measurements;

Do not weaken protection to keep the power on

Never hold a breaker handle in the ON position, bridge a protective device, increase its rating, replace 30 mA with 100 or 300 mA without a design decision, or disconnect PE to stop unwanted tripping.

A symptom is not a complete diagnosis

The same symptom can have several causes. A hot socket may result from a loose contact, overload or damaged plug. An RCBO may operate on overcurrent or residual current. Testing is required before selecting a repair.

Can I reset a tripped breaker once?

Do not reset it when there is heat, smell, noise, water, visible damage or immediate repeated tripping. When the cause is unknown, leaving the circuit off is the safer choice.

Why does the breaker trip after several minutes?

Possible causes include overload, high ambient temperature, loose connection, unsuitable breaker rating or a developing appliance fault.

Why does an RCCB trip when one appliance is connected?

Can a higher-rated breaker solve overload trips?

Can I replace 30 mA with 100 mA to stop RCD trips?

No. This weakens the intended sensitivity and does not repair the leakage or wiring fault.

Should I call 101 or 112 for a burning electrical panel?

Can an electrician diagnose the fault from a photo?
