The author is not a native English speaker, so some wording, style or terminology may require additional checking. Where safety or contractual meaning is involved, the original Russian document, current diagram, equipment marking, manufacturer instruction and responsible person’s direction take priority.

Seven principles to remember

Everyday names are not complete technical definitions

Words such as автомат, УЗО, земля and ноль do not replace MCB, RCCB, RCBO, PE, N and PEN markings.

English terms vary by region

“Distribution board”, “consumer unit”, “panelboard”, “earthing” and “grounding” may describe related concepts but are not always interchangeable in every standard or project.

Russian source documents take priority on Russian sites

The current Russian drawing, written task, equipment marking, manufacturer documentation and site instructions must be checked.

One solution does not suit every building

Apartments, detached houses, timber structures, wet areas, outdoor installations, hotels and industrial sites have different conditions.

A breaker is not selected from wattage alone

Cable size, installation method, ambient conditions, load behaviour, prospective fault current and automatic disconnection conditions must be considered.

Working equipment is not proof of a safe installation

A lamp can illuminate and a motor can run while protective conductor continuity, insulation, device selection or terminal condition is unsafe.

Translation does not replace isolation and testing

Before work, all relevant energy sources must be identified, isolated and verified using the procedure and equipment required for the site.

A control panel, power supply, VFD, capacitor bank, UPS or standby source may retain or restore dangerous voltage. Follow the site isolation procedure, equipment instructions and responsible person’s directions.

Burning or hot-plastic smell

May indicate an overheating terminal, damaged insulation or arcing.

Hot socket, plug or protective device

May be caused by poor contact, overload or damaged equipment.

Sparking, crackling or buzzing

Can indicate a loose connection or electrical arc.

Repeated MCB, RCCB or RCBO tripping

The cause must be identified before the device is repeatedly reset.

Electric shock from a metal enclosure or tap

Stop touching and using the affected equipment or water point.

Do not approach or operate wet electrical equipment.

The circuit must remain out of service until inspected.

Do not weaken or bypass protection

Do not install a higher-rated breaker without checking the cable, increase the residual current setting, bridge N and PE, bypass an RCD or hold a breaker handle in the ON position.

About the English electrical section

What is currently available in English?

Six independent English guides are published: the 150-term dictionary, electrical work in Russia, MCB/RCD/RCCB/RCBO guide, 100-phrase guide, Russian electrical panel labels and electrical fault warning signs. English also remains available in the shared seven-language dictionary.

Will Russian original terms be retained?

Yes. Important Russian terms will be shown next to the English explanation so they can be recognised on diagrams, equipment labels, instructions and work orders.

Does the site use British or American electrical terminology?

The guides use internationally recognisable IEC terminology where possible and include common British and American alternatives when they affect understanding, such as earthing/grounding and distribution board/panelboard.

Are Russian and international electrical rules identical?

They should not be assumed to be identical. On a Russian site, current Russian requirements, the project documentation, equipment instructions and the actual installation conditions must be applied.

Can these guides be used as professional training?

No. They explain terminology, general principles, communication and warning signs. They do not replace professional education, practical training, electrical safety qualification or competent supervision.

Does this section provide instructions for live work?

No. The section does not provide step-by-step instructions for dangerous live work. Safe isolation and verification are treated as fundamental requirements.
