Russian electrical panel labels: how to read ЩР, ВРУ, QF, N, PE and PEN

A practical guide to the abbreviations, device references, circuit names and conductor markings used on Russian distribution boards and electrical drawings. Learn how to distinguish a main switchboard, intake assembly, apartment board, circuit-breaker, residual current device, neutral bar and protective conductor.

The drawing legend always takes priority

Russian panel abbreviations and reference designations are widely reused, but their exact meaning can vary between design organisations, company standards and legacy installations. Read the project legend, current single-line diagram and equipment marking before interpreting a label.

Do not remove the panel cover to identify equipment

A closed-panel label can be read safely from outside. Internal parts may remain energised even when the main handle is OFF. Incoming terminals, meter sections, standby sources, UPS circuits and backfeeds require identification, safe isolation and verification by qualified personnel.

How do you read a Russian electrical panel?

Start with the panel name and source, then identify the main switching device, final circuit references, protective device ratings, circuit descriptions, neutral and protective bars, conductor markings and the current diagram. Do not assume that a colour, label or old circuit schedule is correct until it has been verified.

A reference designator is not the complete device specification

QF1 tells you that the drawing treats the item as a switching or protective device, but it does not tell you the rated current, breaking capacity, trip curve, residual current function, number of poles or installation suitability.

How to distinguish L, N, PE and PEN

L

Line conductor

A live conductor carrying supply voltage. In three-phase systems the phases are commonly marked L1, L2 and L3.
N

Neutral conductor

A current-carrying conductor connected to the neutral point. It is identified by blue when colour identification is used.
PE

Protective conductor

Защитный проводник

Used for protection against electric shock. The green-yellow combination is reserved for protective conductors.
PEN

Combined protective and neutral conductor

Совмещённый защитный и нейтральный проводник

Combines PE and N functions in a defined part of the installation. It must not be treated as an ordinary neutral conductor.

PEN separation is a defined system point

In a TN-C-S arrangement, the PEN conductor is separated into PE and N at a defined location. After this point, PE and N have different functions and must not be casually reconnected.

A label such as “Kitchen” is not precise enough for safe isolation

A kitchen may contain several circuits for sockets, oven, hob, dishwasher, lighting, ventilation and refrigeration. The circuit schedule should identify each final circuit clearly.

Identifies the third item assigned the QF reference in the relevant drawing or functional group.

XT1:12

Terminal reference

Commonly read as terminal 12 of terminal block XT1, subject to the drawing convention.

L1 / L2 / L3

Phase identification

Identifies line conductors in a three-phase system, not necessarily their physical colour.

N1 / N2

Separated neutral groups

May distinguish neutrals belonging to different RCCBs, sections or sources.

PE

Protective conductor system

Identifies protective conductor terminals or bars.

Safe external check

What can be checked without opening the panel?

Panel name and location

Photograph the external label, room and nearby equipment.

Visible device markings

Record model, C16, 30 mA, Type A, 6 kA or other front markings visible through the cover.

Circuit schedule

Check whether the written list is present, legible and consistent with actual circuit operation.

Warning signs

Note danger labels, access restrictions, supply source and standby power warnings.

External damage

Look for cracks, missing blanks, soot, discolouration, water, deformation or unusual heat.

Sounds and smell

Buzzing, crackling or burning smell requires the affected installation to be inspected professionally.

Do not open a hot, wet, damaged or crackling panel

Keep people away and do not operate the panel if there is smoke, arcing, water ingress, strong burning smell or visible melting. A safe shutdown and emergency response may be required.

The written label no longer matches the modified installation.

Two different devices use the same reference, making diagrams and reports ambiguous.

Missing Russian and functional names

Labels such as “Line 1” do not explain which room or equipment is supplied.

Neutral conductors from different RCCB or RCBO groups are connected together.

Operating current may flow in protective conductors and residual current devices may trip.

Use the standard and the project legend together

A standard may define identification principles, while the project legend assigns the exact reference used in that drawing set. Do not infer a device function from letters alone when the legend or product marking is available.

Frequently asked questions

Russian electrical panel labels

What does ЩР mean?

It normally means щит распределительный, or distribution board. The exact service area and function must be checked from the project.

What is the difference between ВРУ and ГРЩ?

ВРУ is an intake and distribution assembly associated with receiving and distributing a building supply. ГРЩ is the main distribution board. In a particular building the names, boundaries and equipment may overlap, so the project definition is decisive.

What does QF mean?

QF commonly identifies a circuit-breaker on Russian drawings. The device type and rating must be confirmed from the product marking and legend.

Is every device marked QF an MCB?

No. The reference can be used for different circuit-breaker classes. Read the model, standard, current rating, poles and function.

What colour is the neutral conductor?

When colour identification is used, N is identified by blue. The actual connection must still be verified in an existing installation.

What colour is PE?

The green-yellow combination is reserved for protective conductors.

Can PE and N be connected together in an apartment board?

They must not be casually connected. Their arrangement depends on the earthing system and the defined PEN separation point. Incorrect reconnection can create dangerous current paths.

What does Резерв mean in a panel?

It means spare or reserve. The way may be empty, equipped but unused, or reserved for a future circuit. Verify before assuming it is isolated.

Can old panel labels be trusted?

They are useful information but may be outdated after modifications. Safe identification and testing are still required.

Can a panel be read from a photograph?

A photograph can identify visible labels and device markings, but it cannot confirm internal wiring, neutral separation, terminal condition, conductor continuity or fault current.

Why are some Russian labels different between projects?

Design organisations and company standards may use different expanded references. Always read the drawing legend and title block.

Should the distribution board diagram be updated after changes?

Yes. The circuit schedule and available as-built documentation should reflect the installation as actually completed.
